In addition to Nanaimo and Vancouver Island’s growing population, Vancouver Island is home to some of the best communities in the country to retire, according to a survey by Maclean’s magazine. According to Maclean’s magazine, Vancouver Island boasts 7 of the top places to retire in Canada.

With a growing number of retirees moving to Vancouver Island, it is worth noting that the divorce rate amongst Canadians age 50 and over is on the rise. Recent studies have shown that people aged 50 and over are twice as likely to go through a divorce as in 1990; and, divorce rates for those over age 65 are also on the rise. These are referred to as “grey divorces”, and they often come with a unique set of issues that can have devastating consequences on both parties’ financial stability into retirement years.

Grey divorces come with specific challenges. Specifically, couples planning early retirement may find that the increased costs of maintaining two one-person households after divorce prevents this. One or both spouses may be forced to work past 65 to maintain a particular lifestyle. Longer lifespans mean longer financial support because the duration of spousal support can last a lifetime in lengthier marriages. Women tend to live longer, thus leaving women to face higher economic risks on their own. Grey Divorce is not only rising in Canada but also in the United States. Forbes magazine has also featured articles on grey divorce and the effect it has. Find out how to find a good family lawyer here.
