The HON. Keith Bracken accepted an appointment to the British Columbia Provincial Court in 1991 and then sat on the BC Supreme Court from 2007 to 2018.

MacLean Law is thrilled to announce the appointment of The HON. Keith Bracken to our Vancouver team. Keith has a wealth of experience and knowledge from serving as judge on both the BC Provincial Court and the BC Supreme Court, and now brings this expertise to MacLean Family Law.

Despite his prestigious and impressive record, Keith is wonderfully approachable and will provide strategic advice and guidance to both junior and senior lawyers at MacLean Law. He will advise and assist the team as they progress with our high profile, precedent-setting cases, bringing unique insights from the pinnacle of legal life as these cases are heard before the Supreme Court and the courts of Appeal in British Columbia.

In addition to advising and conducting his own casework, Keith Bracken will also provide mentorship, such as mock hearings to discuss and analyze potential outcomes for current cases. Lawyers will receive help with arguments, potential appeal outcomes, and both written and oral material before submitting to various courts. This kind of mentorship will be invaluable to MacLean Law as it shapes and progresses the next generation of partners to the firm.

Keith sees MacLean Law as a prominent family law firm with multiple offices across Canada and bilingual lawyers. Based initially out of Victoria, Keith is excited to work from all our offices to help lawyers progress with a better understanding of court systems.

After serving in the RCMP, Keith began his law career practising in the areas of commercial litigation, including banking, insurance and property law. He was called to the BC Bar in July 1977 and the Saskatchewan Bar in 1986. He was appointed to the BC Provincial Court in 1991. After 16 years on the Provincial Court, he was appointed to the BC Supreme Court. As a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria Law School and a lecturer at Thompson Rivers University, Keith has presented programs to lawyers, judges and police officers. As a judge, he presided over cases from all aspects of the law including family law, commercial, administrative law and criminal law. He has taken courses as a mediator and presided over numerous settlement conferences as a judge. As a lawyer, Keith has appeared before the Provincial Court, Supreme Court and the BC Court of Appeal.

Keith is a co-author of British Columbia Courtroom Procedure, now going into its third edition. He served on the Central Saanich Police Board for 6 years and is a non-practising member of the Saskatchewan Bar. As a Deputy Judge in Nunavut and the Yukon Territories, Keith loved going to remote locations to hold court in the North.

Lorne MacLean, QC, founder of MacLean Family Law said, “Keith will be a wonderful addition to our team. His prestigious legal career can only help our lawyers progress their careers, and our clients to resolve their family matters.”

MacLean Law has 7 offices across BC, Calgary, and in the Toronto Financial District and has successfully protected clients’ rights since 1983 in the field of high net worth and complex family law disputes. The firm has dealt with issues such as spousal and child support, property division, child custody, guardianship and access, and marriage-like relationships, both in Canada and internationally winning multiple, precedent-setting cases in all levels of court.
