Kanika Bajaj is an Articling Student at the Vancouver office of MacLean Law and is expected to qualify as a lawyer in British Columbia in 2024.

She believes that every person is born with a purpose to do something for the society. The spiritual purpose of every human being is to serve the society in whichever possible way one can, as life is like a game of tennis, it begins with ‘Love all’ and the player who serves well wins the game. Kanika, through her knowledge, would like to serve society by helping people get justice so that those who are deprived of their legal rights can be redressed. With this belief and after being inspired by her eldest sister, who was one of the counsels to win a landmark family law case in India before the Supreme Court of India which brought a new ground for divorce in India, Kanika chose law as her career to become a voice for the voiceless and thus following the footsteps of her two elder sisters who are also lawyers in India.

Kanika started her legal career as a lawyer in India 12 years ago with a renowned Intellectual Property Rights advocate in Delhi. She represented a diverse range of clients from pharmaceutical companies to multi-national conglomerates, food and beverage companies, liquor brands, apparel companies, cosmetic brands, real estate companies, publishing houses, etc., and assisted her mentor in complex trade marks, copyrights, designs, and patents litigation and prosecution matters, before the Supreme Court of India, High Court of Delhi and various tribunals in India. She was part of the team representing her office at one of the biggest annual conferences for attorneys and legal professionals, the International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Conference, 2014, held in Hong Kong, attended by more than 10,000 people from across the globe spanning from most influential brand owners from across industries, to IP lawyers, professors and students.

After practicing intellectual property law for many years, she diversified her area of practice and ventured into other fields of law like family, consumer protection, criminal, constitutional, general civil litigation, etc.

Kanika chose family law as families are the building blocks of a society. As a child is the future of the world, it is important to make sure that they grow up in a happy, loving and healthy environment. Thus, a robust society and civilization can be developed if every individual in a family respects & loves each other. As India is a common law country with a multicultural society similar to the legal and societal system of Canada, Kanika believes that with her vast experience and knowledge of Indian laws, she can help not only Canadians but also the vast immigrant population especially Indian families in Canada facing matrimonial disputes like divorce, separation and other matters related to family law. Kanika is compassionate, connects with her clients well, and always advises them to settle amicably first so that unnecessary litigations and burden on the pockets in stressful situations can be avoided.

Kanika through her modern approach tries to mold the conventional norms ascribed to a woman in the society. Being an egalitarian and tenacious who cannot withstand injustice, she through her ingenious ways has pushed herself to places, she had never imagined, fighting against injustice which has many times helped her to bring about change in the system.

Apart from law, Kanika loves dancing, reading, writing poetry, painting, traveling, and learning new languages and cultures. She considers herself a learner who is always eager to learn something new every day so that she can improve herself from what she was yesterday. She is a foodie, who enjoys cooking and likes to try new recipes and cuisines. She takes delight in hosting her friends at her place over a meal and makes sure that anyone visiting her home doesn’t leave an empty stomach.
