As a TRU Law alum, Fraser MacLean was pleased to be back on campus as a guest lecturer along with Jesse Emmond. The topic was Spousal Support, a complex, often highly emotional aspect of separation or divorce.
MacLean Law also has ties to TRU having invested $65,000 in the Doug Eastwood Q.C. Maclean Law Scholarship and sponsors the MacLean Law Prize in Family Law. The firm decided to invest in the award after working successfully with several TRU alumni, including Fraser MacLean.

Fraser MacLean
- Fraser was lead counsel in the landmark ruling pertaining to Canada’s first fake case hallucinations by artificial intelligence (AI) after discovering fake legal cases. The case of Zhang v. Chen, 2024 BCSC 285 involved the father’s application to have parenting time with his three children in China.
- In an ultra-high net worth case of Zhang v. Chen, 2023 BCSC 2206 involving $70-90 million in assets, Fraser MacLean achieved one of the highest interim support awards in B.C. Despite the husband alleging an income of $155,000, the court imputed an income of $1,00,000.00, ordering $16,062 monthly in child support, mid-range spousal support and section 7 expenses shared 83/17%.

Jesse Emmond
- In Ishwarlall v. Ishwarlall, 2023 BCSC 310, Jesse Emmond successfully obtained a trial judgment in a high-net-worth family case that saw a Canada-wide arrest warrant issued for a BC doctor that fled Canada, as well as awards for a protection order, full custody for the mother, a transfer of 100% family property, and significant retroactive and prospective child and spousal support awards, fines and special costs throughout the litigation.
