FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRASER MACLEAN NAMED FELLOW OF LITIGATION COUNSEL OF AMERICA
Fraser MacLean is a strategic and forward-thinking family lawyer known for his commitment to guiding clients through challenging legal matters with clarity and compassion. He was recently nominated as one of Canada’s Top 25 Lawyers in the Changemaker category, recognizing his innovative approach and impact on the profession. Since the beginning of his legal career, he has built a reputation for strong advocacy in negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings at all levels, including the BC Court of Appeal. Fraser is recognized for his leadership and practical insight, consistently going above and beyond for clients navigating complex and often emotionally charged family law disputes.
Fraser has led and co-led numerous high-profile and precedent-setting cases, including Zhang v. Chen, 2024 BCSC 285, the first Canadian decision addressing the legal implications of AI-generated false cases, which resulted in costs awarded to his client. In a related case involving $70–90 million in assets (Zhang v. Chen, 2023 BCSC 2206), he secured one of BC’s highest interim support awards. Other significant victories include S.S.C.M. v. A.C.W., where Fraser successfully argued against the recognition of a Texas parenting order, and S.T.M. v. C.G.H., a 25-day parental alienation trial resulting in major relief for his client, including compensatory parenting time and enforcement orders.
Fraser’s expertise extends to high-net-worth trials, complex international parenting disputes, and enforcement of disclosure obligations. Notable wins include obtaining retroactive child support dating back to 2016 (K.R. v. J.R.), overturning a final order from a summary trial (Cho v. Kim), and securing reapportionment of property in Dennis v. Gill. He has also contributed to the legal community as a guest lecturer at TRU Law and through philanthropic support at his alma mater, helping establish the MacLean Law Prize in Family Law and the Doug Eastwood Q.C. MacLean Law Scholarship.
The Litigation Counsel of America (LCA) is a prestigious, invitation-only honorary society for trial lawyers, established to represent the evolving landscape of the American legal profession. While membership is predominantly American, select Canadian lawyers who demonstrate exceptional merit are also eligible. With membership capped at 3,500 Fellows—representing less than one-half of one percent of U.S. lawyers—the LCA is intentionally exclusive, prioritizing diversity, inclusion, and excellence across all segments of the bar. Its mission is to honor experienced and highly qualified litigators, promote professional development and scholarly engagement, uphold superior advocacy and ethical standards, and support a strong, independent judiciary.
Fellows are carefully selected following a rigorous vetting process that considers their litigation accomplishments, trial effectiveness, and ethical reputation. Typically, Fellows are senior partners, shareholders, or experienced independent practitioners with a minimum of twelve years in litigation. The LCA also includes Judicial, Academic, Legislative, and In-House Counsel Fellows. Once appointed, Fellows may retain their designation indefinitely, provided they continue to uphold the standards of the organization. After seven consecutive years, a Fellow may be recognized as a Senior Fellow, and a limited number of Associate Fellows are also appointed each year as emerging leaders in the field.
The selection process integrates peer nominations, internal research, client feedback, judicial input, and recognition by other reputable legal associations. Unlike many honors that rely solely on courtroom frequency or public visibility, the LCA emphasizes a broader measure of effectiveness, including leadership, legal insight, and impact within one’s area of practice. This comprehensive and inclusive approach ensures that LCA Fellows represent one of the most accomplished and diverse groups of litigators in the profession, united by a commitment to excellence in the courtroom and integrity in practice.
Congratulations to Fraser on his well-earned selection as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. This distinguished recognition reflects Fraser’s exceptional skill, integrity, and impact as a litigator, as well as his consistent dedication to excellence in complex family law advocacy. Being invited to join this exclusive group is a testament to Fraser’s courtroom leadership, professional ethics, and outstanding contributions to the legal profession. His selection reinforces what clients and colleagues already know: Fraser is a trusted, forward-thinking advocate at the top of his field.
